Donna Campbell Smith is an author, freelance writer, and photographer. She has an AAS degree in equine tech and is a certified instructor.

I recently bought my first digital SLR camera. Along with the camera I needed the rechargeable battery and a memory card. Then I needed backup of both those items. Along with that came the question of where to store those very small accessories so they would not become lost in the dark recesses of my large camera bag.

Not getting the exact leads I had in mind from my online and experienced photographer buddies, and not wanting to keep bugging them, I started my Google search. Even though the cards come with a protective plastic case of their own, I wanted to store several in something big enough to get my hands on when I needed them. I didn’t want to have to design and make my own storage case for my miniature gear.

It turns out there are more different styles of memory card holders than you can shake a stick at – plastic, metal, fabric and various sizes to hold from one to a bazillion cards. I especially like the multipurpose ones for storing not only the cards but batteries as well. I took a closer look at five models that looked interesting. If you have a favorite memory card storage case not featured here be sure to tell us about it in the comments section of this article.

One design that seems very handy to take into the field with you is the OP/TECH USA Media Keeper, which wraps around the camera strap or your belt for quick access. It is made of leather and priced at $9.95, but only holds two cards.

For just five bucks the Sunpak Battery and Media Storage Case holds a Memory Card and Battery. It is made of nylon, has a zipper closure and a snap for attaching it to your belt or camera strap. It only holds one digital memory card (any type) and four AA batteries or two CR-V3 batteries.

The Pelican 0910-010-110 Secure Digital Memory Card Case holds 8 Secure Digital Cards and 16 Mini Secure Digital Cards and is Water-Resistant. It is made of Polycarbonate Resin. [Amazon] Retails for $24.95 but Amazon has it for $16.65.

The Gepe Card Safe Extreme is watertight and floats in water. It protects the memory cards from humidity, dust, and electrostatic charge. Four compartments offer space for several different memory cards, and grip each of them tightly. At B&H Photo it is priced at $24.79. I may want this later on, and if I were going to photograph near water or from a boat it would be a must-have.

I have narrowed down my search to the Lowepro DMC-Z Compact Slim Digital Memory Pouch because of its multi function and affordable price. It is made of water resistant Neoprene and will hold up to 6 memory cards, PC card or 4 AA batteries, or the rechargeable spare battery my camera requires. It has 6 laminated pouches and one full-length mesh pocket, AND it has a Slip Lock belt loop so I can take it along in the field. It cost only $9.95 from B&H Photo www.bhphotovideo.com. I have finished my search and placed my order.

I chose the Lowepro Memory Card Wallet
